Your pastor is frequently asked for favors from people that he seldom knows, requests that most often entail a moral obligation. We are asked to verify the person as a practicing Catholic; we are asked to make a statement of character for someone seeking employment; we are asked to baptize a child of parents who do not live in or attend our parish; we are asked to schedule the wedding of someone who is not registered in the Community. There are Church Laws requiring that a Pastor know the party or parties before he gives any information or allows permission regarding the sacraments.
It is difficult and embarrassing at times to question people unnecessarily. Most often the party concerned becomes angry or upset. There is a simple solution to these problems - become a registered, known and active member of the parish concerned. Young people, particularly today, do not think to register in the parish where they reside. Once a person is out in his/her own, he/she does not come under the registration of their parents. He/she needs to register in the parish where he/she resides.
When people marry, they establish a new identity and a new home. Consequently, they need to register in the parish in which they live. Much grief and frustration can be avoided if procedures are followed.
If a couple lives out of the area and wished a child baptized here, then we need a letter of permission from the pastor of the church where the family is registered. So, it is important to be registered in a parish. The priest can only extend permissions to those who are registered members and known to him.
To register:
- Call the parish office 323-1160
- Stop by the parish office Monday through Friday 9:00AM to 2:00PM
- See a priest after Sunday Mass, introduce yourself and ask to be registered
